Cosplay Tips and Tricks: Resources

I haven't done any cosplaying yet. The closest I thing I did to cosplaying was to "stalk" a certain cosplayer on her Deviant Art account. Ooh! I just remembered that I cosplayed as some sort of ninja way back in high school. Those were good times. :)

I've recently been planning to go to a convention this year. I don't know what convention but probably Cosplay Mania 13. I'm not going  there as a cosplayer though but a cameko. I want to take lots and lots of pictures and share it on this blog. If all goes well, this'll be my first convention.

Anyway, I was looking for tips on how to survive conventions. I've read stuff about conventions being hot as hell or the existence of "fan fun", the putrid smell of con-goers. Those kind of stuff just discouraged me to go. Hot and putrid are things that I can't just blatantly ignore. And my further readings took me to cosplaying tips that I though might be helpful for you, dear readers. I'm no expert in cosplaying so I'll just give you the links.

The Cosplay Guide: Tips by Goddessofthemoon

These tips are the general do's and don'ts when going to any convention. A really good checklist before heading off.

The Beginner's Guide by cosmicgeminicosplay

This is a long list of do's and don'ts. Similar to the tips by Goddessofthemoon but more detailed and friendly. There are also tips from veteran cosplayers at the end of the article. Learn from the experts!

A forum from otakon.com

This one's a little funny. The focus of their conversation just suddenly shifted to a footwear debate! On my honest opinion, there should be a balance between the consistency of your footwear  to the character you are portraying and the comfort it provides. It is cosplay after all. If you have footwear woes, this is a must read.

Well there you have it, I've read it myself and I think it has good content.

What tips, tricks, and resources can you share?

Top 5 Cosplayers Unordered List: My Best of the Best

The Philippine cosplay scenario is undoubtedly one of the most competitive cosplay communities in the world, albeit the cult following. Many cosplayers and cosplay enthusiasts have named dozens of cosplayers as their own king and queen of cosplay; they created multitudes of top fives, top tens, and even top twenties lists of the best Philippine cosplayer - most of which consist of cute little girls in risque poses and ultra-mini skirts. But still, the million dollar question still looms - who really is the best cosplayer out there? Hey, don't look at me. I'm not here to tell you who's queen, who's king, and who's the freakin' joker. I'm just going to add another opinionated top-something list of the most talented Filipino cosplayers. See if we agree. Enjoy!

Guy Singson

If there's a course in costume-making Guy Singson would have a PhD. A collector of mecha figures since he was a child, Guy Singson specializes in creating extremely detailed and superbly-awesome armors. This guy (pun intended) really knows his stuff. Each of his creations are masterpieces in their own right. I've spent almost an hour just typing this paragraph - 90% of which was spent browsing his deviant art account. With a long list of awards under his utility belt, Guy Singson is no doubt one of the best cosplayers locally and internationally.

Alodia Gosiengfiao

In the local scene, cosplay is pretty much synonymous to Alodia Gosiengfiao. A quick Google search on "cosplay" reveals just that - Alodia is often nicknamed the Cosplay Goddess or Cosplay Queen. With her beatiful face, gorgeous body, cool costumes, and a whooping 1.1 MILLION followers on Facebook, who'd want to argue? External features aside, Alodia also has a lot of awards under her belt. At the tender age of 15, she has since been winning various awards both in local and international competitions. She's currently a VJ on Animax and also endorses a lot of consumer products and services. Her rise to fame also paved the way for cosplaying to go into mainstream media.

Team Tux
Team Tux is a group cosplayers, the most famous (in my opinion) of which is Jin Joson. Combining cosplay with superb photography, Team Tux takes cosplaying to a higher standard. They make their own clothes, do their own make-up and design their own props too. If you're looking for real art, look no further than the creations of Team Tux.

Nikki Chan

Nikki Chan is one of the more unknown cosplayers on the local scene - or maybe it's just because Nikki is shadowed by cosplay behemoths mentioned above. Nevertheless, Nikki Chan can stand her ground when it comes to cosplaying. An avid player of Monster Hunter (I liked this game too), this cute and innocent-looking chick was 1st runner up for 2010's Cosplay Costume of The Year Award thanks to her Rathalos Blade Master armor.

Jerry Polonce

Jerry Polence has been in the limelight for a very long time. She's been featured in Culture Crash Comics in 2004 and was winner of Animax Robo-Dream in 2005 where she cosplayed the innocent Chii from Chobits. She also competed (and won first place) in other countries including Japan. Her most recent achievement includes her winning of the Animax Cosplay Photo Contest in 2010. Now, she travels the world to guest in international conventions. She also holds her fans dear and even sets meet-ups for them. Jerry Polence just goes to show that big dreams are possible if you strive for it.

And there you have it, my take on the best Filipino cosplayers out there. Take note that there are no numerical associations with each cosplayer which means the list is unordered. These cosplayers are chosen because of certain qualities that I think a cosplayer must have - creativity and craftsmanship, superb passion for cosplay, and an eye for detail.

What's your top cosplayers list?

Cosplay, On To Mainstream Media!

Alodia Gosiengfiao and Myrte Sarrosa. Gosiengfiao - really hard to type. -_-

Based on my humble experience, the hobby of cosplaying and consequently the cosplayers have been treated negatively by the general public. People view this hobby as something weird or just something that just doesn't look right.

One story I have is about a class mate in high school. Let's name her Girl-chan.*haha* Girl-chan is quite the fan for all things Japan and of course, she's a cosplayer. Girl-chan sews her own costumes (she makes really fine clothes!) and even won a fashion contest in one of our school festivals. It was a really good kimono-inspired dress. It was well-made and can be sold on some women's apparel boutique. Heck even Comic Alley! However, she's treated as someone weird, someone unlikable. Well, she is a little different - but aren't we all? What separates her - or more precisely what people DO to separate her from the general pool of "normal" students is that they brand her as some sort of outlier all because of her love for cosplaying.

This scenario, I think, has created a sort of cult following - cosplaying (and socializing) with only a few people in tight-knit groups.

GM Miao as Vayne from LOL
However, this may not be the case anymore. I could say that cosplaying (at least in the Philippines) got swept into mainstream media when Alodia Gosiengfiao rose to fame. Along with her comes other beautiful cosplayers such as Myrtle Sarrosa and for the gamers, GM Miao from Garena.  These gorgeous ladies shed new and positive light to the hobby that was once viewed as something weird.

And now, there's a huge community of cosplayers and cosplay enthusiast all over the country! There are even conventions held in MOA or other SM Malls. TV networks such as Hero and Animax have also helped lift the unlikely image of cosplaying.

Surely, cosplaying in the Philippines has a bright future ahead of it.

As Edward Elric put it,

"Stand up and walk, keep moving forward."

Cosplay Realizations

This is cosplay. However...

Before, I thought that cosplay was all about beautiful and sexy girls portraying an equally beautiful and sexy fictional character.

I couldn't be more wrong.

I realized that cosplay is a form of performance art - an performance wherein an artist, in this case a cosplayer, uses his or her body, voice and movements to tell a story or to convey an idea or expression. The act of cosplaying is not created on canvas nor performed with paintbrushes (unless the character portrayed is Sai from Naruto or some other paintbrush-wielding character). Nevertheless, cosplaying is a form of art that anyone - not only beautiful and sexy girls - can do.
...this is cosplay too.

Events!

Here's one awesome event and it's happening RIGHT NOW - Toy Mania!  The toy exhibit will last until tomorrow though so there's still time!

Alodia is also a guest so I expect a few thousand visitors to come.
